A Hidden Gem Close to Home: Haley's Lagoon

A Hidden Gem Close to Home: Haley's Lagoon

Nestled in the wolds of Vaughn, WA, lies a hidden gem that few have the pleasure of discovering—Haley State Park. It’s a place that I have long considered my private sanctuary, a retreat where the only sounds are the whispering pines and the chirping of birds. I often find myself sitting on the beach all alone, taking in how lucky I am to have access to this seclusion. But, after much contemplation, I decided that this enchanting spot deserves to be shared, knowing that those few who make the journey will find it immensely rewarding.

The Adventure Begins

The adventure starts on a trail entrance hidden in the growth of the trees, unmarked by any sign. Many people drive by daily, well, many locals, as in this area there’s nothing you’d be driving to besides local homesteads. As you enter between the trees, you’ll find the beauty that awaits, with towering trees forming a natural archway overhead and glimpses of sunlight breaking through the canopy. You’ll notice the lack of crowds—a rare and precious gift for any nature lover.

You will begin winding your way through the forest for the first mile pretty easily before opening up to a drop down. This is a bit of a scramble, but just think of the private beach ahead! The path retains a rugged charm, with roots and rocks providing a natural challenge as well as natural steps. This hike is 2.7-3miles depending on how far down the beach you decide to go and has a 384ft elevation gain.

As you meander along the trail, you’ll encounter a variety ferns, old growth, and lush vegetation. In the spring and summer, wildflowers bloom. The air is filled with the earthy scent of moss and pine, a scent that smells like home.

A Glimpse of Scenic Views Ahead

You’ll encounter an opening in the trees to your right and find Haleys Lagoon as well as the first glimpse of the ocean ahead.

The highlight of this hike is seeing the mountain range out in the distance. After a short while longer, you’re rewarded with an open inlet that feels like your own private beach. You'll have a view of Herron Island off in the distance and Harstine Island just past. On a clear day, the sight is nothing short of spectacular, with the snowy mountain range looking down on you. It’s a perfect spot to rest, reflect, and perhaps enjoy a cold swim.

Preservation and Respect

While Haley State Park is public land, if you decide to explore this hidden gem, remember that this area isn’t a tourist destination and the locals value their privacy. Respect locals’ property lines on the beach and leave no trace. Pack out what you pack in, stay on the obvious trails, and respect the wildlife. By doing so, we can ensure that this special place remains unspoiled for future generations to enjoy.

The Decision to Share

Deciding to share Haley State Park with others wasn’t easy. It’s a place that feels almost too perfect to be real, a sanctuary that I’ve cherished in solitude. But I believe that the beauty of nature is meant to be shared, and that those who seek out such hidden gems are often those who will appreciate and protect them the most.

So, if you’re looking for a peaceful escape, a place to reconnect with nature and find serenity, make your way to Haley State Park in Vaughn, WA. It’s a journey worth taking.
